很多有歷史性的商業建築物都會面對一個放棄原有的設計而重新裝潢, 還是要維持一開始的原狀的抉擇. 像這一間位於在San Francisco的Palace Hotel, 其實自1909年"重新"開幕後 (原為1875年開幕, 1906年毀於San Francisco 大地震之後的大火), 他們離最後一次的翻新也有二十年了 (最後一次為1991年). 他們的歷史固然悠久, 可是在硬體上面無法跟後起之秀相比擬. 不過,也就是因為他們堅持保存當年的模樣, 反而也吸引了對歷史性建築物有興趣的客源.
也因為我之前參加了一個San Francisco City Library所發起的 Walking Tour (http://sfcityguides.org/desc.html?tour=61), 所以我才了解說, 在當時, 這間飯店對於整個San Francisco來說是多麼的具有代表性. 在大地震還沒發生之前, 他們飯店自建的水塔可是全舊金山市最大的, 當時他們也有人說"如果連 The Palace Hotel都會起火的話, 那整個舊金山市就會燒起來了" . 不幸的是, 在當時地震所引發的大火讓城市的一大半都陷入了火海, 在不得已的情況下, 當時的消防隊引用了飯店的水塔來救火. 不過, 他們備有的水還是無法抵擋那熊熊的大火, 最後 The Palace Hotel也遭受祝融之災, 全毀於大火中. 也因此, 有許多人將1875 到1906年間的Palace Hotel稱為 "Old Palace Hotel", 1909年至今的就稱為"New Palace Hotel".
當我對這間飯店的歷史有更深一層的認識之後, 我更是對這間飯店感到了很大的興趣 (他們的地點也是數一數二的好, 就在San Francisco Bart New Montgomery Station上面, 可以從此直達灣區各大景點, 四通八達). 也讓我決定去下榻這一間歷史悠久的飯店.

除了當時創舉的電梯之外, 他們也保留了當年的樓梯 (畢竟當年沒有電梯所以也不能蓋太高的樓層)

室內泳池 - 這在地狹人稠的舊金山簡直是奢侈的象徵. 這裡同樣的採用了天井讓自然的光線從各個角度照入泳池內.

At the Palace hotel, there is a sushi place called Kyo-Ya, where you can sit at the bar, or order dinner menu things. I think they used to have teppanyaki too. The sushi bar has small selection, but supposedly really good chef if you sit in front of Tonai-san. However, prices are very high and probably not as good as LA's Mori Sushi or even Sushi Zo for variety.
Kyo-Ya is actually the Japanese corp that owns Palace Hotel. I walked by there once during lunch when I was staying at St.Regis SF. It seems like a quiet lil place in downtown to have lunch. I was not sure if its catering to Americans mostly or more traditional style
Shamefully, I have not tried either Mori or Sushi Zo so I can't compare.
